One common cause of low back pain is hip tightness. If the hip muscles become tight this puts additional strain and stress on the joints and muscles in the lower back. In order to improve hip mobility and decrease lower back pain you need to loosen up the hip muscles.
What causes the hip tightness in the first place?
Sitting for long periods of time causes the hip musculature to tighten up. Some people are calling sitting the new smoking. We sit for a majority of our day whether we are commuting to and from work, working on a computer, and relaxing and watch a TV show. This is why we recommend patients switch to sit to stand desk to reduce the amount of time they’re sitting. Improving your workplace ergonomics will help but you also need to stretch and mobilize the hip muscles. To loosen up the muscles in the hip I recommend patients use a foam roller to mobilize the muscles. Below is a video showing how to foam the muscles in your hips and legs.
