Are You Getting Enough Nutrients?
There five common nutrients that could help you lose weight, build muscle, and beat heart disease.
1. Vitamin D- This vitamin’s is commonly known in its role of strengthening your bones and skeleton. But Vitamin D also helps to prevent heart attacks, decreases artery inflammation and reduce colds/flu’s. Vitamin D is created in your body when the sun’s ultraviolet rays penetrate your skin. The problem is the vitamin D you stockpile in the summer months is often depleted by winter, especially if you live in the northern half of the United States. Adding a vitamin D supplement of 2,000 to 4,000 IU will help keep your vitamin D supply strong during those winter months. Your body will also regulate the correct amount of Vitmain D in your system during those sunny summer months.
2. Magnesium- This mineral is involved in more than 300 bodily processes. A recent study also showed that Magnesium also lowers C-reactive protein, a key marker of heart disease. It is recommended that you have about 400 mg of Magnesium daily in order to reach your body’s need.
4. Vitamin B12- Vitamin B12 helps maintain the nerve connections in your brain. B12 deficiencies are developing due to drug interactions. Acid Blocking drugs such as Prilosec, and the diabetes medication Metformin can cause B12 deficiencies. You can find B12 in Salmon, Lamb, and fortified cereals.
5. Iodine- Your thyroid gland requires iodine to produce the hormones T3 & T4 both of which help control how efficiently you burn calories. That means insufficient iodine may cause you to gain weight and feel fatigued. You may think that you are getting adequates levels of iodine but half of our food contains less than the FDA recommended amount of iodine. Manufacturers of processed foods are not required to use iodized salt in their foods thus leading to iodine deficiency. One great source of iodine is milk, along with eggs and yogurt are also good sources of iodine.
